Events celebrate Kazuo Ohno at age 100
In October 2006, the world’s most respected butoh artist, Kazuo Ohno, reached the age of 100. In addition to the publishing of a first book of works by photographers who have made Ono their subject, plans call for numerous events including the third holding of the Kazuo Ono Festival and foreign and domestic performances and workshops by Yoshito Ohno. “Butoh” is a dance form originated in the 1960s by Tatsumi Hijikata that gave expression to unique aspects of Japanese physical characteristics and sensibilities. In the latter half of the 1980s it became known and highly appraised internationally as “butoh” and had great influence not only in dance and theater but also in art, film and literature. Kazuo Ohno’s representative works include La Argentina, an homage to the great Spanish dancer of the same name that he discovered in his youth, My Mother, Dead Sea and Waterlily.
