Japan-Germany joint production of Yotsuya Ghost Story starts European tour
Taking the opportunity of the “Year of Germany in Japan” program sponsored by the German Foreign Ministry, a production of the traditional Japanese play Yotsuya Ghost Story directed by the contemporary German theater director Jossi Wieler with a staff including the Berlin-based costume and stage art artist Kazuko Watanabe and twelve Japanese actors began a tour of Europe on June 1.
Yotsuya Ghost Story is based on a well-known Japanese Kabuki play Tokaido Yotsuya Kwaidan, which is the story of a woman named Oiwa who returns as a ghost to avenge the cruel murder of her husband Iemon.
Wieler has transformed this famous Kabuki play by Tsuruya Nanboku into a modern drama with a subway platform as its setting.
On this tour, performances will be given at the Vienna Arts Festival Week and the Holland Festival.
