8th Asahi Performing Arts Awards Grand Prix won by Chong Wishing’s Yakiniku Dragon (Korean Barbeque Dragon)
      The 2008 winners have been announced for the 8th Asahi Performing Arts Awards (Organizer: Asahi Shimbun), honoring the year’s outstanding works and artists in theater, dance and the other performing arts. The Grand Prix went to Yakiniku Dragon (Korean Barbeque Dragon) (written by Chong Wishing, co-directed by Chong Wishing and Yang Jung Ung) performed at the New National Theater Tokyo in April 2008. As with the 2002 play Sono Kawa wo Koete Gogatsu (winner of the 2nd Asahi Performing Arts Awards Grand Prix, by Oriza Hirata and Myung-Hwa Kim), this is the award winner that is a joint Japan-Korea production of the New National Theater and the Seoul Art Center. Set in a Korean barbeque restaurant in Japan, this play explores the present, past and future of Japanese-Korean relations in a staging that makes effective use of music and theatrical device to tell the story of a Japan-resident Korean (zainichi) family with humor and melancholy. Playwright Chong Wishing is also the winner of the 12th Tsuruya Nanboku Memorial Award with this play. The other winners of the Asahi Performing Arts Awards are listed below.

Akimoto Matsuyo Award – Commemorating the life of achievement of the late Matsuyo Akimoto, this award is given to works, individual artists and companies bringing productions of great artistic and entertainment value in theater.
- Masachika Ichiimura (Keen, La Cage aux Folles)
Special Award – Given to individuals and companies for long years of noteworthy achievement.
- No winner
Kirin Dance Support Award – An award supported by the Kirin Brewing Co. and given to outstanding works of dance presented within the previous year.
- Noism08 (Nameless Hands)
