ROK hosts numerous Japanese theater productions in 2012

Since the initiation of projects like the joint program of ongoing drama readings by the Japan-Korea Theater exchange Center (Japan) and the Korea-Japan Theater Exchange Council (ROK) launched in 2002, recent years have seen an increasing number of performances by Japanese theater companies are in the ROK and a growing number of Japanese plays are being performed by Korean theater companies.
Already this year Seinendan has performed Kakumei Nikki (January / Doosan Art Center) and Dokkasei in collaboration with Gwangju’s Theater Company Shinmyoung has performed Nobi (April / Gwangju and Seoul) in tent venues. There has also been a continuing long run of Koki Mitani play. From May a number of performances are being held including leading members of Bungakuza performing Sakura no Kinoue, Sakura no Kinoshita (Peace Theater Festival in Gwangju), Bunkaza’s Tekerettsunopa (Pohang Bada International Theater Festival), and Japan’s long-established Shingeki theater companies are participating in regional festivals. Representative works of the late Shogo Ota, Komachi Fuden (Busan International Performing Arts Festival) and Sarachi (Empty Lot) (Seoul Theater Festival) are also being performed at Korean festivals.
Also, Korea’s Seensee Company has been engaged in a long run of a Korean production of Seigo Hatasawa’s play Oya no Kao ga Mitai (I want to see the parents’ faces) that deals with the problem of bullying, which is the increasingly the focus of attention as an issue in Korean society. The now famous playwright and director in both Japan and the ROK, Chong Wishing has collaborated with the Michoo Theater company and the Namsan Arts Center for a production of the play Haru no Uta ha Umi ni Nagare (tentative title).
