This annual contemporary dance festival organized at the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No. 1 (run by the public interest organization Yokohama Arts Foundation) has been held every year since its launch in 1996 for the purpose of nurturing young choreographers and popularizing contemporary dance in Japan. Yokohama Dance Collection EX2013 is the festival’s 18th holding and will run for 15 days beginning February 3 at the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse venue.
The festival’s main program is the competition held in two divisions, the Dance Composition Division and the New Choreographer Division. The Dance Composition Division this time features 12 finalist groups selected from some 124 applicants from six countries, while the New Choreographer Division finalists are 15 artists/units) from Japan under the age of 25 selected from 40 applicants. The finalist pieces will be performed from February 6 to 11 and the respective grand prizes for the two divisions, the Jury Prize and Outstanding New Artist Prize, will be announced on the final day of the festival along with the other prizes. The finalists for the two divisions are as shown below.
The Prize Winner Performances program will feature solo and company pieces by KENTARO!!, the 2008 French Embassy Prize for Young Choreographers. The Program to Engage in Exchanges with Overseas Festivals will feature performances of a duo work by Mikiko Kawamura (winner of the Yokohama Dance Collection EX2011 Outstanding New Artist Prize) created during an artist residence at the JoJo – Oulu Dance Center and a work choreographed by the same Center’s artistic director Satu Tuomisto will be performed at the same time.
In the Japan-Korea Dance Exchange Project “Dance Connection” program that started last year, Yuriko Suzuki (winner of the Yokohama Dance Collection EX2012 Dance Composition Division Jury Prize) and Hwang Soo Hyun (selected choreographer of the Seoul Dance Collection) presented a work titled Face to Face that they created during two residency periods in their two countries.
During the festival there will also be free dance showcases by former participants. Plans also call for many overseas theater and dance festival directors participating from through the tie-up with TPAM.
