Last year, 2013, marked the 30th year since the passing of the playwright Shuji Terayama on May 4, 1983 at the age of 47 and the year saw remake performances of many of his works as well as exhibitions and books about the artist.
The Ryuzanji Company, which was launched in 1984 with a production of Shuji Terayama’s play Farewell to Movie – Fan version, is touring to Montreal and New York in January 2014 with a production of the early Terayama play Hanafuda Denki - The Dance of Death (directed by Saori Aoki).
Hanafuda Denki was premiered in 1967 by Terayama’s theater troupe Tenjo Sajiki. Ryuzanji Company performed this work for the first time as a “Terayama Version of the Threepenny Opera” with 23 original musical compositions of singing and dancing at the Tokyo Shinjuku Hanazono Shrine in 2001. In 2011-2012 the company performed it in Indonesia (Bandung, Yogyakarta), Edinburgh, New York, Victoria and Vancouver, winning the Overall Excellence Award for Design at the New York International Fringe Festival and the Pick of the Fringe award at the Victoria Fringe Festival.
The performance venues on this tour will be the unique theater Basin St. Michel in Montreal built into a converted swimming pool and New York’s off-Broadway theater HERE Arts Center.
