The 59th (2015) Kishida Drama Award winner is Kenji Yamauchi’s Torowaguro
 
The final judging of the 59th Kishida Drama Awards organized by Hakusuisha Publishing Co. took place on February 16th and the winner chosen was Kenji Yamauchi’s Torowaguro. This play, which premiered in 2014 with a performance by Yamauchi’s company Shiroyagi no Kai at The Suzunari, is “an ordinary story” centering around the ordinary lives of two couples and interspersed with stories about grotesque dreams.
The seven members of the Kishida Drama Award jury were Ryo Iwamatsu, Toshiki Okada, Keralino Sandorovich, Hideki Noda, Suzuki Matsuo, Masataka Matsuda and Akio Miyazawa. In his juror comment about the play, Keralino said: “It is written in a phlegmatic style that depicts with marvelous skill the pettiness that many Japanese secretly harbor within themselves.” The awards ceremony is scheduled for April 27 at the Nippon Shuppan Club Hall.

Kenji Yamauchi
Born in Tokyo in 1958, Yamauchi is the leader, playwright and director of the theater company Shiroyagi no Kai. In 1983, he joined the Dentsu Eiga (Film) Company (presently Dentsu Creative X). In 1992, he became a freelance script writer penning numerous scripts for television commercials, television dramas, short films, Web dramas and the like. In 2004, he began activities in theater with his play Budo to Mikkai (Secret meeting with grapes) presented as “a play by the TV commercial director Kenji Yamauchi.” In 2006, he joined with producer Wakano Joshima to launch the theater company Shiroyagi no Kai, In 2011, a film version of his play Mitsuko Kankaku was released nationwide in Japan and was nominated as an entry for the Warsaw Film Festival. Yamauchi’s representative works include Mi no Hikishimaru Omoi, Koritsu no Yusen (nominated for the 58th Kishida Drama Award), Megane Fusai no Istanbul Ryokoki, Bisho no Kabe, Atarashii Hashi - le pont neuf and Budo to Mikkai among others.
