Kuro Tanino’s play Jigokudani Onsen Mumyo no Shuku (Jigokudani Hot Springs Ignorance Inn) winner of the 60th (2016) Kishida Drama Award

On February 29, 2016, the final jury session for the winner of the 60th Kishida Drama Awards organized by Hakusuisha and the winning drama was Kuro Tanino’s play Jigokudani Onsen - Mumyo no Shuku (Jigokudani Hot Springs - Ignorance Inn). This play premiered in 2015 as a Niwa Gekidan Penino production at the Morishita Studio in Tokyo. The play tells a tale of a gothic world in which a father-son puppeteer act comes to perform at a hot springs spa stepped in the unordinary desires of the long-term guests. The stage art that uses a revolving stage device to create the main elements of an old wooden-structure onsen inn with its changing rooms, onsen baths and guest rooms plus surrounding stage space in the small theater became a major focus of attention.
The Awards jury members included Ryo Iwamatsu, Toshiki Okada, Kerarino Sandorovich, Hideki Noda, Oriza Hirata and Akio Miyazawa. Okada praised the play, calling it one of the best examples of how a play’s anti-era stance can have the most vivid strength in speaking to the era. He also pointed out how the gentle but clear depiction of the characters’ secret desires as they are kept hidden, was not only technically very sophisticated but also very sexy.
The awards ceremony will be held on May 9, 2016 at the Nihon Shuppan Club Kaikan in Kagurazaka, Tokyo.
