Profile:
Established in 1994, Yubiwa Hotel performs in alternative spaces such as abandoned factories, strip joints, and restaurants. They combine theater, dance, music, and art to express themes of sexuality and violence, and the basic instincts involving food, life, and death. They use their bodies to illustrate the mindscape of women from a female perspective, in order to cast doubt on stereotypes of human nature and sexuality. They participated in the Asia Women's Theater Festival held in Manila in 2003 with It's Up to You. 2006 saw the UK premiere of their highly acclaimed CANDIES–girlish hardcore, with subsequent tours in Europe and the United States and performances in Osaka and Tokyo. With costumes and sets using insect and animal motifs, womanhood and life are clearly delineated in a space reflecting both girlish sexuality and innocence. In 2008, Please Send Junk Food will be performed in Brazil in a co-production with local artists. Their latest work Exchange is due for a world tour, and progress is underway for a further work to be performed at home and abroad in 2009.
