In the year 2000, six young kyogen actors from the SHIGEYAMA Sengoro family, which belongs to the Okura-ryu school of kyogen based in Kyoto, formed a kyogen group called TOPPA! They were SHIGEYAMA Senzaburo Masakuni, Motohiko, Shigeru, Ippei, Doji. Their formal name is "The study group of good spirit, technique and physical condition that promotes educational classical kyogen." Their ultimate objective is to hone their skills and to convey the excitement of kyogen to the young generation by producing performance opportunities. The members are drawing many young female fans and appear in TV dramas and other media; they have become idols of the traditional performing arts.
