Finalists decided for 5th “Toyota Choreography Award 2006 – finding leaders of the next generation in choreography”
The “Toyota Choreography Award” program was begun in 2001 under the sponsorship of Toyota Motor Corporation as a joint project with the Setagaya Public Theatre, and is dedicated to finding and fostering the next generation of choreographers. This Award, which will be presented for the fifth time in 2006, is recognized as a gateway to success for choreographers of contemporary Japanese dance and has brought us artists such as Osamu Jareo and Misako Terada, Ikuyo Kuroda, Shoko Higashino, and Maho Sumiji.
This year, the eight finalists were picked by members of the selection committee from a list of 186 candidates, which included applicants from the general public and recommendations from figures in the performing arts world. The final review, “Nextage,” which is open to the public, will be held on July 29 and 30 at the Setagaya Public Theatre. Finalists will each give a performance of up to 30 minutes, and winners of the “next-generation leader in choreography award” and the “audience award” will be decided.
In addition to the ¥2,000,000 prize, winners are given the chance to present their work at either the Setagaya Public Theatre or the Theatre Tram. Winners also become eligible for a total of ¥1,000,000 for giving an overseas performance if it is within two years of receiving the Award.
