National Noh Theatre adopts audience subtitle displays
National Noh Theatre
Tokyo’s premiere theater for traditional Noh and Kyogen performances, the National Noh Theater, has introduced an audience subtitle system for the first time in Japan, beginning with its performances in November. The subtitle monitors provide simply-worded explanations of the plays for novice viewers, advice about appreciating the play and timely display of the dialogue and narration scripts on a 3-channel system that allows the viewers to select from Japanese, English and no display. Unlike the electric billboards used in foreign-language performances or the headphones used in Kabuki, this system provides an individual LCD display on for each person in the audience, located on the back of the seat in front of them.
