Southeast Asian tour starts for Seinendan’s production of Tokyo Notes
Beginning on June 23 in Bangkok, Thailand, one of Japan’s leading contemporary theater companies, Seinendan, will make a performance tour of Southeast Asia with its production of the play Tokyo Notes (supported by the Japan Foundation, overseas performance program). Seinendan was formed in 1983 and is led by the playwright and director Oriza Hirata. Its base of operations is the Agora Theater run by Hirata and as a company it is also actively engaged in overseas performances and international exchange projects with theater groups in China, South Korea and France.
Tokyo Notes is one of Hirata’s best-known plays and is a winner of the prestigious Kishida Drama Award, known in Japan as the gateway to recognition and fame for playwrights. This play takes its inspiration for the Yasujiro Ozu film Tokyo Monogatari (Tokyo Story), which is a story about the brothers and sisters of a family who take the opportunity of a visit to Tokyo by their eldest sister who loves art to visit a museum, and there they fall into conversation about the family’s problems.
This is the second Southeast Asian tour for Seinendan, following one in February and March of 2003.
