IETM Autumn Plenary Meeting held at European Capital of Culture, Vilnius (Oct. 8 – 11, 2009)
IETM is an international network for contemporary performing arts. Since 1981, IETM is a membership organisation which exists to stimulate the quality, development and contexts of contemporary performing arts in a global environment, by initiating and facilitating professional networking and communication, the dynamic exchange of information, know-how transfer and presentations of examples of good practice.

IETM offers information, knowledge, skills and contacts that contemporary performing arts professionals need in order to work transnationally. For this, IETM facilitates networking, organises meetings, sets up communication tools, spreads information, provides knowledge transfer and advocates for the sector.

Although essentially a European network, IETM is very active outside Europe. A number of Satellite meetings took place in Asia: Singapore in 2005, Beijing and Shanghai in 2006, Seoul in 2007 (in collaboration with the Performing Arts Market, Seoul) and in Tokyo in 2008 (in collaboration with the Tokyo Performing Arts Market).

The Autumn Plenary Meeting 2009 was held in Vilnius, this year’s European Capital of Culture, organised in conjunction with Menu spaustuve (Arts Printing House). The main topic of the meeting was “Eastern Promises”, questioning the relation between Eastern and Western Europe 20 years after the fall of the Berlin wall. It questioned what has remained of the initial curiosity and interest and what are the social, cultural, artistic, economic and political relations that are being built now. This theme was analysed and discussed in approximately 30 working sessions. In addition, sessions of presentation of contemporary performing arts from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Georgia and Poland were held, as well as several sessions of project presentations. The meeting also offered a full artistic programme of 24 most interesting recent Lithuanian performances, curated by the International Theatre Festival Sirenos.
