The OMS Drama Prize is organized by Osaka Gas as an award for playwrights living in the Kansai region or engaged in theater activities in the region. The final judging for this year’s 17th OMS Drama Prize took place at Osaka’s Seika Theatre on December 7, 2010. The Grand Prize winner selected from among 50 submissions was Muika by Shin Hashiguchi of the Kyoto Konburi theater company.
Following a long prologue by the playwright himself, the play proceeds as a dialogue between a man and woman telling of the events of day of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, August sixth (miuka in Japanese), 1945, as remembered by their grandmother.
Plans call for the play to be published in the spring of 2011 in a volume including an essay relating the process of its selection for the OMS Prize and jurors reasons for its selection.
