Shu Matsui Wins 55th Kishida Drama Award
The final judging of the 55th Kishida Drama Awards organized by Hakusuisha took place on February 28th and, from the nine finalists, Shu Matsui’s Jiman no Musuko (My son, my pride) was selected the winner. Shu Matsui is a playwright, director and actor who went independent after a period with the Seinendan theater company and now heads his own company “Sample.” He has won the Kishida Drama Award this time in his third nomination. The play Jiman no Musuko was premiered by Sample in September 2010. Of it, one of the judges this time, Ryo Iwamatsu, commented, “It is outstanding for the way it depicts how anticlimactic life can be. Although the relationship between a mother and son is central to the play, the viewpoint from which the characters are seen is unique and there are sexual undertones. The sometimes rough and undefined changing of the scenes is indicative of the way the playwright views theater itself.”
