European tour of the new chelfitsch work Ground and Floor
This September began the European tour of Toshiki Okada and his chelfitsch company’s new play, Ground and Floor (Jimen to Yuka), which will be performed as a collaborative production with festivals and theaters in nine cities. The world premier of this “music theater” work took place at the Kunsten Festival des Arts in Belgium this May. The music is by the band Sangatsu that had such a big effect on chelfitsch’s representative work Five Day’s in March (Sangatsu no Itsukakan) that its name was used in the title. The story is set in a Japan of the near future where almost no one speaks or understands the Japanese language anymore and depicts the struggle between “the living” who inhabit a society that is losing its language and hometowns and “the dead” who haunt them. In Japan, the play was performed in the spot of creation, Kyoto, in September and will be performed at the KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theater (Yokohama) in December.
