Yokohama Dance Collection 2016 competition choreography award winners chosen
The Yokohama Dance Collection 2016 competition, the contemporary dance festival organized for the purpose of nurturing young choreographers and popularizing contemporary dance in Japan, was held this year from February 4 to 7 at the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No. 1 and the winners were announced on the final day.
In Competition I (Dance Composition Division) the Jury Prize grand prix went to the piece Free-free by Aokid x Takumi Hashimoto, a unit made up of Aokid and performer Takumi Hashimoto, whose improvisational performances explore the influences of images on the dancer’s physicality. In Competition II (New Choreographer Division) the Outstanding New Artist Prize was awarded to the piece Zoo Keeper by Koichiro Tamura, a Kyoto-based director choreographer and dancer.

•French Embassy Prize for Young Choreographers: Junpei Hamada, Convey
•MASDANZA Prize / Touchpoint Art Foundation Prize: Haruka Watanabe, Grand Finale
•Encouragement Prize: Kaori Itoh, Melancholy of square
(Applicants: 133 groups/individuals from 15 countries; Finalists: nine groups/individuals from two countries performed works of up to 20 minutes)
+Competition II (New Choreographer Division)
•Outstanding New Artist Prize: Koichiro Tamura, Zoo Keeper
•Encouragement Prize: Mako Egami, Everyone all over the world lives sensitively to his unpleasantness
(Applicants: 43 groups/individuals / Finalists: 12 groups/individuals performed works of up to 10 minutes)
