Kunsten Festival des Art (May 8 - 30, 2020) deliberates possible reduction in scale or cancellation, and the Singapore International Festival of Arts May 15 - 31, 2020 is cancelled
To combat the growing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Kunsten Festival des Arts, held each year in the Belgian capital of Brussels, is considering scaling down or possibly cancelling the event (as of 28 Mar. 2020). While the Festival website is displaying all 34 invited productions and attendant programs from 21 countries currently in development, ticket sales are being withheld. Toward a final decision to be reached in early April, the Festival is in dialogue with diverse artists, including Koreans Joho Koo and Jisun Kim, Italy's Romeo Castellucci, Iran's Ali Sghar Dashit, China's Wang Bing, Malaysia's Mark The and Japan's Akira Takayama, with discussions on actions that should be taken, services that could be provided and options which should not be pursued. Currently being considered are a partial production of the festival with a limited number of performances, a postponement of the Festival to a date later this year, or complete cancellation of this year's Festival. In the event of a cancellation, the Festival intends for all of the 18 productions slated for this year to return for an enlarged Festival next year, which will coincide with its 25th anniversary.
In addition, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which initially announced a partial cancellation, has now announced a full cancellation of all productions just as it was about to begin. Of the cancelled productions, some are set to be held later in the year; the Festival is held yearly in the months Feb. - Mar. The Singapore International Festival of Arts, scheduled to being May 15th, has also announced its cancellation.
The harrowing impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) on international arts festivals the world over can be felt in Japan as well, with postponements of the Saitama Triennale (dates to be determined), the Northern Alps Arts Festival (dates to be determined) and the ICHIHARA ART x MIX 2020 (to Mar. 20 – May 16, 2021).
